Deconstructing and breaking the problem down helps alleviate the offender from self -identifying as a criminal. In this context, the offender becomes easily overwhelmed by daily stressors, which lead him to use substances. To support his substance abuse habit he turns to crime. Deconstructing the problem saturated story allows the group members to focus on the root of the problem which makes it more manageable, instead of identifying as a drug addict, a criminal, or someone that is depressed (Freedman & Combs, 1996).

The actors in the role play are all volunteers and gave consent to participate in the role play. None of the actors have served time within the correctional system.
